The Jewellery You Wear in Your Eyes: Bvlgari Sunglasses

What defines the brand and why choose it

There is a fundamental difference between a fashion brand that designs jewellery and a jewellery house that designs fashion. Bvlgari belongs to the second category in a way no other luxury brand can claim with the same historical depth. When Sotirio Bulgari — Greek silversmith trained in Kalarrytes workshops, the greatest silversmithing centre in the Balkans — arrived in Rome in 1881 and opened his first shop in 1884, he was not founding a fashion maison: he was installing a metal craftsman's workshop at the heart of the city that had invented Western luxury.

The sons Costantino and Giorgio expanded the Via Condotti 10 boutique in 1934 — the same occasion on which the BVLGARI logo in classical Latin was installed above the door. In the 1950s, when Cinecittà turned Rome into Hollywood on the Tiber, Via Condotti 10 became the mandatory destination for international stars. Elizabeth Taylor bought her most iconic jewels there — she famously declared she spoke four languages: English, French, a little Russian and Bvlgari. Audrey Hepburn was a regular customer, Ingrid Bergman and Gina Lollobrigida made Bvlgari the jeweller of 20th-century cinema culture. Today, global ambassadors include Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Dua Lipa. The house entered the LVMH group in 2011. Since January 2024, eyewear is produced by Thélios with a declared principle CEO Jean-Christophe Babin articulated: Manufacturing techniques rooted in the world of jewellery applied to eyewear. This is a technical description, not a marketing metaphor.

Styles and uses: the Bvlgari eyewear collections

The Serpenti is the most iconic women's collection: the snake introduced as a Tubogas bracelet-watch in 1948, symbol of seduction, metamorphosis and feminine power. Serpenti Forever carries the most artisanally worked hinge in any luxury collection: the metal snake head with hand-applied enamels, replicating the clasp of the Serpenti Forever bags. Serpenti Viper is the most jewellery-like: scale details on the temples carry a higher-than-industry-standard gold percentage. Serpenti True Colors incorporates photochromic lenses inspired by emerald colour. The B.zero1 connects eyewear to Bvlgari's most conceptual design — the ring conceived in 1999 with input from Zaha Hadid's studio, fusing Roman BVLGARI epigraphy with industrial Tubogas spiral lines. B.zero1 eyewear offers square sun and cat-eye optical versions, ultralight metal frame, artisanal black enamelled profile and studs, with a special version featuring rose gold-plated lenses. The Octo and Octo Finissimo are the most conceptually significant men's proposal: the octagonal geometry of the watch that has set ten world thinness records translated to high-engineering titanium eyewear with super-flat profile and lacquered-dial chromatic palettes. The Tubogas — revived in 2024 as an independent iconic collection — carries the tubular spiral motif on the temples.

Practical details: enamel, titanium and Italian manufacturing

Bvlgari sunglasses are manufactured in Italy by Thélios with the most demanding materials and processes. Hand-applied enamels on Serpenti Forever hinges and B.zero1 profiles require artisanal vitrified enamel application — applied in layers over metal, fired at high temperature and polished to perfectly uniform surface — identical to the process used in the house's jewellery. Octo titanium is aerospace grade with the same high-precision machining as the Octo Finissimo watches. Serpenti Viper temples incorporate above-standard gold proportions. UV 400 protection with solid, gradient and mirror lenses in precious stone colour palette: emerald green, sapphire blue, ruby red and the neutrals of gold and platinum.

Via Condotti 10 and the culture of Roman luxury

To understand Bvlgari eyewear, it helps to understand what Via Condotti 10 has represented in the global history of luxury. In the 1950s, when Rome's Cinecittà studios were producing European cinema at the highest international level — the period known as Hollywood on the Tiber — the proximity of the Via Condotti boutique to the shooting locations, the hotels where stars stayed and the restaurants where directors met made it the most frequented jewellery destination in the international jet set. Elizabeth Taylor was so devoted to the house that she reportedly learned basic Italian to communicate with the jewellers; her declaration that she spoke English, French, a little Russian and Bvlgari entered fashion legend. Richard Burton bought her multiple Serpenti pieces — including the Serpenti Tubogas watch she wore in the 1963 film Cleopatra.

This connection to cinema, to the moment when a jewel becomes inseparable from the character wearing it, lives on in the current eyewear collection. The Serpenti Forever's hand-enamelled snake head is the same clasp that appears on the Serpenti bags; the B.zero1's chain motif is the same one on the ring that Anne Hathaway, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Zendaya have worn at the world's most photographed events. The eyewear is not an interpretation of the jewellery DNA: it is the jewellery DNA applied to a different object, with the same techniques and the same obsession with finish.
